WORKSHOPS

Painting on Yupo Paper
Instructor: Susie Blyveis
One day– Friday, October 20 10am to 4pm (6 hrs) Ages 18 and up
Limit: 10 adults Cost $45 members / $65 non-members
Explore painting on Yupo paper . Painting on this paper turns out more abstract than what you might
think of with watercolor. The colors are really bright and landscapes are loose.

Paint Yourself Calm
Instructor: Susie Blyveis
One day - Friday, November 17 10am to 4pm (6 hrs) Ages 18 and up
Limit: 10 adults Cost $45 members / $65 non-members
Inspired by Jean Haines’s book of the same name, instructor Susie will guide you to a peaceful zone.

Painting nature in a calm mood using plastic wrap, scraps of paper, credit cards and a variety of tech-
niques that are sure to bring your paining experience to a new level.

Cards with Handmade Paper
Instructor: Susie Blyveis
One day—Friday, December 1 10am to 4pm (6 hrs) Ages 18 and up

Create your own one of a kind cards using mono-printing and a variety of materials including hand
made paper.

KIDS CLASSES - SATURDAYS

F17-13 PENCIL SKETCHING AND MORE
for Students/ Parents
Instructor: Tom Garland
Students of all ages learn the basics of drawing in this upbeat classroom setting. Bring a drawing

pad and pencils. Other materials that will be explored include markers, paint and colored pen-
cils. Parents are encouraged to come and work alongside their children for a $10 fee! A $5 dis-
count for each additional child from the same household applies to this class.

F17-14 WATERCOLOR FOR ALL!
Instructor: Tom Garland
Instructor Tom Garland will lead you on fun filled journey into the world of watercolor!
This is a great next step after taking our Pencil Sketching class.
Parents are encouraged to come and work alongside their children for a $10 fee.

SU-14 TWEEN CERAMICS
Instructor Nicole Kamidoi
Pinch pots, coil pots, slab work, and glazing will be explored in this class designed for
middle school age students.
Class size limit 10 students Ages 11 - 14

MONDAYS

F17-01 CO-OP INDEPENDENT CERAMICS
Facilitator: Dallas Shoesmith
Students must have taken a minimum of 3 Advanced Ceramics classes. Students must be able
to work without an instructor. Skills in construction and glazing methods, advanced knowledge
in chemicals and glaze formulas, the ability to load kilns and knowledge in firing temperatures
is necessary. Extra open studio time is available on Thursdays from 1-4 pm.
$25 material fee includes 25 lbs of clay, firings and glazes. Class limit-10 students(18 years +)
8 wks-MON. Sept 18 –Nov 6, 1 pm-4 pm (24 hrs) $ 80 members/$ 105 non-members

F17-02 ADVANCED CERAMICS
Instructor: Dallas Shoesmith
(Prerequisite for Independent Ceramics)
Explore surface tensions and add natural organic touches to traditional pots and sculptures. Be
willing to explore. Glazing, use of chemicals and other processes will be demonstrated. You
will have the opportunity to advance your creative skills by exploring a variety of mixed media
with your clay creations. There will be a Raku workshop offered during the semester. Extra
open studio time is available on Thursdays from 1-4 pm.
$25 material fee includes 25 lbs of clay, firings and glazes. Class limit-10 students (18 years +)
8 wks- MON. Sept. 18– Nov 6 7-9:30 pm (24 hrs) $ 100 members/$ 125 non-members

F17-03 BEGINNING WATERCOLOR
Instructor: Elizabeth Sweeny
For those who have never dabbled in watercolor here is your chance. In this relaxed class you
will be guided through different aspects of working with watercolor painting. Supplies to get you
started are available and your instructor will supply you with a list of items that you may want to
have for your own exploration.
Class limited to 8 students (18 years +)
6 wks—TUES. Sept 19—Oct 24 10 am to Noon (12 hrs)$60 members / $85 non– members

F17 –04 ADVANCED WATERCOLOR

Open to watercolor enthusiasts who are looking to delve into new techniques and take their
painting to another level! Participants are encouraged to bring your own supplies and projects.

F17 –05 BEGINNING CERAMICS
Instructor Nicole Kamidoi
For those who have never worked with clay before, or those who would like a refresher
course! This class offers you the opportunity to work with an award winning ceramics artist
who will gently guide you through working with clay in many different techniques.
Class size limited to 10 students (18 years +) supply cost of $25 for clay
8 wks TUES Oct 24 —Dec 12 5 to 7:30 (20 hrs) $100 members / $125 non-members

F17-06 BEGINNING /INTERMEDIATE CERAMICS
Instructor: Cathreen LaGrand
This class is an introduction to the basics of working with clay for beginner and intermediate
students. Working on the wheel will also be included. Learn the elements of clay design,
glaze techniques and the firing process. $25 material fee includes 25 lbs of clay, firings and
glazes. Class limit-5 students (18 years +)

F17-07 ACRYLIC FOR BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE ARTISTS
Instructor: Linda Holderbaum
The media of acrylic paint will be explored through various exercises for both beginners and intermediate
students. Students bring their own paints and paper/canvases. Canvases will be provided for the learning
exercises. Class limit-10 students(18 years +)

F17-08 FUSED GLASS
Instructor: Michelle Dunkelberger
Open to students of all levels. This open format class will begin each week with a guided project,
perfect for those who have never touched glass before or those who would like a refresher. There will
also be plenty of time a guidance for those who would like to work on their own projects.
Class size limited to 8 students (18+)

F17-09 SEE IT, DRAW IT
Instructor: Lanessa Miller
An opportunity to learn the basics of sketching form observation. Drawing as a group in class as well
as drawing a little each day at home in a sketch journal! Whatever the skill level students will learn by
doing and walk away with the practices and confidence to
continue on their own.

F17-10 STUDIO PAINTING
Instructors: Craig Bishop
This class is designed for all skill levels and provides instruction in oil, acrylic and watercolor. Painless
critiques will take place each week followed by a voluntary potluck lunch. Bring your own supplies.

F17-11 OPEN STUDIO TIME –PAINTING AND CERAMIC STUDIOS
Open to Art Center members enrolled in a class— from 1 -4 pm- free to AC members if enrolled in a class
and $12 per session for Art Center members not enrolled in a class.
10 wks- THURS Sept 14 Nov 16 , 1-4 pm
Free to members taking class/ $ 12 per session for members not enrolled in a class currently. No
instructor available. Space limited to 10 students in each studio.

FIGURE SCULPTURE OVER A CONE ARMATURE
Instructor: Sid Paradine
Starting with a hunk of clay you will create your own figure sculpture using a cone armature.
Working the clay, firing and finishing will all be covered in this new ceramics class. Some
experience is beneficial but not required. $25 material fee for 25 lbs of clay, firings and glazes

Private Events

Plan your next teambuilding or recreation event with us. This is a wonderful opportunity for your team to work together in a relaxed, studio atmosphere with an experienced artist/instructor on either individual art pieces or a group work of art.

Workshops are available in both 2-D and 3-D Departments.

REGISTRATION- To register call 269-962-9511 or register online with PayPal, in person or mail registration with payment to Art Center of Battle Creek, 265 E. Emmett St., Battle Creek, MI 49017. Instructors do NOT accept regis-trations in the classroom.

Students registering on line through PayPal should contact the Art Center before registering to be sure the class they intend to take is running.
Registration is on a first come first serve basis. Payment is due in full at the time of registration. Registra-tions will be accepted until the second week of class if space is available. Classes that do not have a minimum of six (6) students one-week prior to the start of class, however, will be canceled.

REFUNDS-Refunds will be given ONLY when a registrant withdraws from a class AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR to the first class session. NO CASH REFUNDS WILL BE MADE. Refunds will be in the form of a check or through PayPal if that was the original method of payment. There are no refunds for missed class sessions. No refunds will be given after the first class session. A $10 service fee will be deducted from all refunds. Please allow one month from the date of request to receive you refund.

CANCELLATIONS- The Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class when there is insufficient enroll-ment (minimum of six (6) students per class). Registrants will be notified. Registration pays are not processed until we have the mini-mum number of students required. We will make every effort to re-schedule a class when an instructor cancels but due to space and other classes we may be unable to re-schedule.

INCLEMENT WEATHER- If the Center finds it necessary to close due to weather conditions, cancella-tion information will be found at 269-962-9511. Classes cancelled for inclement weather will be resched-uled whenever possible and every effort will be made to contact stu-dents by phone.

WAIT LISTS- When a class fills quickly, the Center will offer registrants the opportunity to be placed on a waiting list. Wait list students will be called when space becomes available or if there are enough students to offer another class section.
