Art of Soul: Reflections of Detroit's Motown
Berry Gordyís legendary Motown made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a sound that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century. No other record company in history has exerted such an enormous influence on both the style and substance of popular music and culture.
Opening February 5th at the Art Center is Art of Soul: Reflections of Detroitís Motown. Art of Soul, a concept created by board member Dorothy Height who passed away last summer, was her way of celebrating Black History Month. We are continuing with the concept with changing themes each year. This year the Motown theme surfaced through discussions with the Music Center of South Central Michigan, who will doing a Symphony concert with a Motown theme on February 25th.
The exhibit at the Art Center will include historical information on the Detroit Motown of the 1960s and 1970s and artwork created by talented local artists with a Motown theme. Area artists have also created artwork from old 33 1/3 vinyl records with a Motown or 60s/70s theme. These will be hanging in the galleries as well. Come see artworks featuring Barry Gordy, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Michael Jackson and others.
Art of Soul was the idea of former board member and Art Center friend Dorothy Height. In keeping with Dorothyís dream a free Motown concert will be also be held. This small fundraiser to keep this exhibit going each year, the concert will held on Friday, February 24th beginning at 6:30 pm at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Battle Creek. Local artists will be recreating the music of Motown this evening.
Art of Soul: Reflections of Detroitís Motown will open on Sunday, February 5th with a free reception from 2-5 pm and will continue through Saturday, February 25th.
